Spotlight on: Nichoas J Salon & Spa

This week's spotlight is all about making sure your 'do is perfect when you say "I do".

Nicholas J Salon is located in downtown South Bend and, as they like to say, they offer "Uptown style... in downtown South Bend". Here are her answers to some questions posed by us:

What inspired you to start your own business?
I was inspired to open Nicholas J. Salon in an instant! I was attending a class at an Aveda Institute in East Lansing, MI. where I was learning the '4 looks' that Aveda puts out each season. (I was an 'in-salon coach' for Aveda) I was taking a break from a class and I walked into a room where about 30 stylists were cutting manequin heads! I felt an instant rush and knew I needed to be a part of something 'bigger' everyday! The next week I contacted my Aveda Rep and we began the process of a business plan and being accepted by Aveda to be one of their salons! I've never regreted the decision!

What is your advice to brides who are thinking of how to wear their hair on wedding day?
Our experienced staff will work with you on this.....but we suggest letting your face shape determine how you will wear your hair for your wedding. Along with your faceshape you will want to consider the style of your dress.

Regal, romantic, retro, relaxed and red carpet: these are a few of the descriptions I hear when discussing an overall image with our brides. This is really important in establishing the final look and feel. In general, a bride with a rounder face will look sleeker with an updo, and a bit of height at the crown. This elongates the face giving it a leaner look. A flattering look for someone with a long, lean face would include a hairstyle with soft, loose curls. This will give the bride a fuller look on the sides to create a more balanced look.

Another factor when considering your choice of hairstyle is whether the bride would like to have her neck covered or not. Some brides would much rather that she doesn't need to tuck or fix any bit of hair for photos through the Wedding day, while others feel very bare without the comfort of hair around the shoulder. Half-up-half-down is a popular compromise.
What are trends you see in hair styles for 2009 weddings?
The best advice I can give a bride is to be careful of trends that are really 'different' looking! Weddings are not the place to make statements that will have people 'talking' for the wrong reasons. We've even had a bride come in and ask for an updo she saw in a sci-fi movie.....The Fantastic Four! (she even tried to get us to go see the movie the night before her wedding!) The best look for any bride is staying true to who she is and keeping with the 'feel' of her wedding.

What will a bride and her party experience at Nicholas J Salon?
We like to meet with a bride a few months before the wedding for a complete consultation and run-thru! The day before your wedding we pamper the bridal party, mothers and even the flower girls! Our speciality is a mani/pedi party that will knock your socks off! During your time with us your party can have a member of The South Bend Chocolate Cafe' take your orders! The South Bend Chocolate Cafe' offers a variety of delicious lattes, coffees, mochas and speciality teas. (also....enjoy a chocolate fondue brought right to you and your party)

Brides......let us give you a look for your rehersal dinner that will start your evening off right! The evening before your wedding is a time to relax as your journey begins, let us help with a style that you'll love!

The day of your wedding we know timing is important and we pride ourselves on making sure you will be where you need to be, when you need to be there! You will meet with your stylist and they will create the look that the two of you worked on during your consultation.

Anything else you’d like to tell brides?
One thing I would like to express to brides is to relax and enjoy what you have worked so hard for all year! Truly enjoy the family and friends that are there to support you and love you. Remember the Wedding Day is important but your marriage is what is truly important. We are here to help you and if you have any questions or concerns during your planning that we can help with, please feel free to contact me:

Spotlight on: Spark Design Studio

Today's spotlight is on one of my favorite paper shops, Spark Design Studio. Owner, Joya Helmuth is a fantastic designer and her shop is full of all kinds of gorgeous paper goods, gifts and inspirations.

I posed a few questions to Joya, and here's what she had to say:

What inspired you to start your business?
I've been a graphic designer for many years as well as a calligrapher (and all-around paper freak), so designing wedding and corporate invitations was something that came naturally to me in addition to corporate design work. A couple of years ago I opened the shop to offer not only invitations but also stationery, journals fine writing instruments, greeting cards and the like. Our customers are great, and I've really enjoyed being able to provide fabulous, well-designed stationery and paper items that you can't find anywhere else in the area.

What advice would you give brides who are looking for invitations?
Realize that the invitation (and save the date, should you choose to send one) is setting the tone for your entire event. It's the only thing that the guests receive prior to walking in the door. They should not only get a sense of your personal style, but also what to expect at the wedding - how formal or casual it will be, things like that.

Also think about the other items you might need, such as ceremony programs, menus, thank you notes, and the like. We recommend that you plan ahead to coordinate these items with the invitation to make everything cohesive. We like to call it your stationery wardrobe, complete with accessories!

What new trend do you see in wedding invitations for 2009?
A higher level of design sensibility from our brides. Target has been lauded for 'bringing the design to the masses', and it's true that great design has become more available and affordable, no longer reserved for the rich and famous. This has increasingly become the case for invitations as well. We approach our invitation albums as a starting point, as examples of what you can do using the wide variety of papers, motifs, formats and type styles that are available. And it doesn't mean that you spend more or have to make a super-complex invitation - some of the most beautiful designs are simple and reasonably priced.

What other services do you offer at Spark Papershop that brides should know about?
We offer much more than invitations: everything from save the date to thank you notes, including (but certainly not limited to) menus, programs, placecards, handmade albums (which can include a guest book), seating charts, favor boxes, custom signage, even water bottle labels and tags for your guest welcome bags.

For those resourceful brides that want to make their own creations, we offer paper, cardstock and envelopes in many sizes and colors, gorgeous ribbons (by the yard or in bulk), as well as adhesive-backed Swarovski crystals to embellish just about anything. Bridal party gifts for men and women include fine pens, personalized stationery, and much more. And don't forget personalized stationery for yourself as a married couple!

We do more than sell products: we strive to be a resource for our customers. For example, we offer a sample book of several calligraphers where you can view their styles and find contact information for each. We have the expertise to help with wording, etiquette, and are happy to do so at no additional charge. We also have a wide network of wedding and event vendors that we can recommend as well. We love what we do and have a passion for stationery - and for helping our customers!

Spark Design Studio is located at 219 North Hill Street, South Bend, Indiana. You can call them at 574 233 8330 or visit them on the web at SparkSite.net
